Our Stories
Letting go of our stories means letting go of the past and not bringing it into the present. I once had a client who was struggling to get my horse to move forward. It took what felt like 10 minutes and then we were able to go back to the stable. When she came back two weeks later, her first question was whether the horse still liked her, because she had to be quite assertive to get it to move. This comment and our conversation made her realize why she was hesitant to assert herself and stand up for her own needs. The underlying fear of not being liked by others resulted in her inability to stand up for herself.
My horse, on the other hand, had no story in his head about the experience and treated her the same as before.
What stories do you tell yourself in a difficult situation? They often contain important clues to old wounds and unconscious fears.
